The Structural Analysis of the Leading Causes of Death with Application of the Life Table Method

Abstract
Korea has faced with great need of health statistics including cause of death in spite of the validity and the reliability of causes of death seem to be poor. Therefore this study observes the mortality and changing patterns of cause of death.
Also this study investigates the life table by cause of death applying the current cause of death structure to the 1985 life table of Korean.
The followings are the summary of the major findings;
1. According to 1987 cause of death statistics ; 70.06 percent of male and 58.50 percent of female died from one of eight causes. In male, malignant neoplasms was the most frequency casue of death and in female, with cerebrovascular diseases.
2. Difference of the proportions of each to all causes by sex ; In male chronic liver diseases, accidental accidents and transport accidents were higher than those of female and in female hypertensive diseases, hert diseases and cerbrovascular diseases were higher than those of male.
3. Generally, changing patterns of the 17 International Classigication of Diseases in Kirea was similar to those of developed countries. But the leading causes of death in Korea was recently in the tend of dissimilar to those of comparative countries malignant neoplasms and cerebrovascular fiseases were especially in the trend of increase since 1981.
4. The effects of age distribution on the leading cause of death marks the peak in male at the age group of 60 to 64 years in case of malignant neoplasms cerebrabascular diseases and at the age group of 70 to 74 with hypertensive diseases, heart diseases. In female, the effects of age distribution on the leading cause of death marks the peak at 65 or over with cerebrovascular diseases, heart diseases and hypertensive diseases.
5. The probabilities of eventually dying of each cause marks the peak at age group of 60 to 64 years in male of malignant neoplasms and at 60 or over with cerebrovascular diseases. In female, the probailities of eventually dying of each cause marks the peak at birth over with cerebrovascular diseases.
6. The life expectancy could be most prolonged by elimination of malignant neoplasms and cerebrovascular diseases as causes of the life expectancy of each cause marks the peak at the age group of 55 to 59 years in male in case of malignant neoplasms and at age group of 80 to 84 in female in case of cerebrovascular diseases.
